How urgent (express) visa processing works and when it is worthwhile
Sometimes travel plans can’t wait. If you need to visit the UK at short notice, you might be wondering whether urgent or express visa processing is available and whether it makes sense for your situation. Here’s what you should know.
What is urgent visa processing?
Urgent or priority visa processing is an optional service offered for certain types of UK visas. It allows your application to be reviewed and decided faster than the standard timeframe. While standard visa processing may take several weeks, priority services can reduce the waiting period to as little as 5 working days for some categories.
It’s important to note that the UK ETA does not currently offer an express option. Most ETAs are already processed within 1–3 business days, which is fast enough for most travelers.
Standard vs urgent UK visa processing
| Feature | Standard processing | Urgent (priority) processing |
| Processing time | Several weeks (varies by visa type) | Around 5 working days for eligible visas |
| Availability | All visa types | Only certain visa categories |
| Cost | Standard application fee | Additional fee required |
| Approval rate | Based on eligibility and documents | Same as standard (faster decision, not higher approval) |
| Best for | Travelers who can plan in advance | Urgent trips, last-minute business travel, or time-sensitive cases |
When is urgent processing worthwhile?
Using a priority service can be beneficial if:
- You have unexpected or last-minute travel plans
- You need to attend urgent business meetings or conferences
- You are applying for a visa type with longer standard processing times (such as work, family, or study visas)
- You want peace of mind knowing your application will be handled more quickly
Things to consider before choosing urgent processing
Availability: Not all visa types are eligible for express processing.
Cost: Priority services come with an additional fee, which can be significant.
Approval not guaranteed: Paying for urgent processing speeds up the decision, but it does not increase your chances of approval.
Timing: Even priority services require you to apply a few days in advance. You should not leave your application until the very last minute.
Our advice
For UK ETA applicants, urgent processing isn’t necessary, as approvals are typically issued in a matter of days. For longer-term visas, urgent services are worthwhile if you have pressing deadlines or cannot wait through standard processing times.
