Misconceptions about visas and ETAs – what people most often misunderstand or confuse
When it comes to international travel, entry requirements can be confusing.
Many travelers are unsure whether they need a visa, an ETA, or both — and misconceptions often cause unnecessary stress. Here are some of the most common misunderstandings about visas and ETAs, and the truth behind them.
1. An ETA is the same as a visa
This is the most common misconception. In reality, a visa and an ETA are very different:
- An ETA is a digital travel authorisation linked to your passport. It is required for short-term visits to the UK for citizens of visa-exempt countries.
- A visa is a more detailed permit that requires an in-depth application, supporting documents, and sometimes an interview. It is needed for longer stays, work, or study.
2. An ETA guarantees entry into the UK
An ETA allows you to board your flight and travel to the UK, but the final decision is made by border officers upon arrival. Having an ETA does not guarantee entry if you fail to meet entry conditions.
3. You can work in the UK with an ETA
Another common misunderstanding is that an ETA gives you permission to work. It does not. With an ETA, you can only engage in activities allowed under visitor rules — such as tourism, short business meetings, or short study courses. For paid employment or long-term study, you need a visa.
4. An ETA can be extended
An ETA cannot be extended. It is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. Once it expires, you must apply for a new one.
5. All travelers need an ETA
Not every traveler needs an ETA. Only citizens from certain visa-exempt countries are eligible. Travelers from other countries will need to apply for a visa instead.
6. You can apply for an ETA at the airport
This is a frequent myth. You cannot apply for an ETA upon arrival. You must apply online in advance and receive approval before you travel to the UK.
