When it comes to international travel, there’s a lot of confusion about the difference between visas and ETAs (Electronic Travel Authorisations). Myths and misinformation spread quickly, often leaving travelers uncertain about what they really need. Here are the most common myths — and the facts you should know before applying.
Myth 1: An ETA is the same as a visa
Fact: An ETA is not a visa. It’s a digital authorisation for short visits, linked electronically to your passport. A visa requires a more detailed application process, supporting documents, and in some cases an in-person interview.
Myth 2: An ETA guarantees entry into the UK
Fact: An ETA allows you to board your flight and travel to the UK, but the final decision is made by a border officer when you arrive. If you fail to meet entry conditions, you may still be refused.
Myth 3: You can apply for an ETA when you arrive at the airport
Fact: You must apply online and receive approval before travelling. There is no option to apply for a UK ETA upon arrival.
Myth 4: An ETA lasts forever
Fact: A UK ETA is valid for two years, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first. Once it expires, you must reapply.
Myth 5: An ETA allows you to work in the UK
Fact: An ETA only permits activities allowed under visitor rules — such as tourism, family visits, short business trips, or short courses. It does not allow paid work or long-term study.
Myth 6: Everyone needs an ETA
Fact: Only citizens of certain visa-exempt countries need an ETA to travel to the UK. Travelers from other countries must apply for a visa instead.
