How long is an ETA valid for, and when do you need to reapply?

When planning a trip to the UK, it’s important to understand how long your Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) lasts. An ETA makes travel simple, but it does not last forever. Knowing when it expires and when to reapply will help you avoid last-minute surprises.

How long is a UK ETA valid for?

A UK ETA is valid for two years from the date of approval, or until your passport expires — whichever comes first.

During this period, you can make multiple trips to the UK without needing a new application, as long as each stay follows the visitor rules (up to six months per visit).

When do you need to reapply for an ETA?

You will need to submit a new application if:

  • Your passport expires or is renewed – since the ETA is digitally linked to your passport, a new passport requires a new ETA.
  • Your ETA reaches its two-year limit – once expired, you must reapply before your next trip.
  • Your personal circumstances change – if your eligibility changes (for example, new travel restrictions or ineligibility factors), you may need to submit a fresh application.

Can you extend an ETA?

No. An ETA cannot be extended. When it expires, the only option is to apply for a new one with updated details and documents.
