How to extend the validity of a visa or ETA
If you already hold a UK visa or an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) and your plans have changed, you might be wondering if you can extend its validity. The rules for extensions depend on the type of document you have and your current immigration status.
Can a UK ETA be extended?
The UK ETA cannot be extended. It is valid for two years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. If your ETA is about to expire or your passport has been renewed, you will need to apply for a new ETA before travelling to the UK.
Can a UK visa be extended?
Some UK visas can be extended from within the UK, but the rules vary depending on the visa type. For example:
Standard Visitor visa: Generally cannot be extended beyond six months, except in specific circumstances such as medical treatment.
Work and study visas: Often allow extensions if you continue to meet the eligibility requirements and apply before your current visa expires.
Family visas: May be extended if you still meet the relationship and financial criteria.
When to apply for an extension
If you hold a visa that can be extended, you should apply before your current visa expires. Late applications may result in losing your legal right to stay in the UK and could affect future applications.
