How to prepare for filling out an ETA application

The UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is designed to be quick and straightforward. Most travelers can finish the form in under ten minutes. But with a little preparation, you can make the process even smoother and avoid mistakes that could delay your approval.

1. Check your passport

Confirm that your passport is valid for your entire trip. Ideally, it should be valid for at least six months after your planned travel dates.

Take a clear photo or digital scan of the bio page (the page with your personal details and photo).

2. Prepare a recent photo of yourself

Use a clear, passport-style photo with a plain background.

  • Make sure your face is fully visible, with no sunglasses, hats, or heavy shadows.
  • Save the photo in a digital format (JPEG or PNG) so it can be uploaded easily.

3. Gather your personal details

The application will ask for basic information such as:

  • Full name (exactly as it appears on your passport)
  • Date of birth
  • Nationality
  • Home address
  • Email address
  • Phone number
  • Occupation and job status

Having these details ready will save you from pausing mid-application.

4. Review your travel plans

While the ETA form itself doesn’t require extensive travel details, it’s useful to know:

  • Your expected arrival date
  • Where you plan to stay in the UK
  • Return or onward travel details

This information can be helpful if asked by border officers when you arrive.

5. Set aside a few minutes without distractions

The form is short, but accuracy is essential. Small errors — like a single digit wrong in your passport number — can lead to rejection. Aim to complete the form in one focused sitting.

6. Have a payment method ready

You’ll need a valid debit or credit card to pay the ETA application fee. Make sure online payments are enabled and the card has sufficient balance.
