The most common mistakes when submitting an ETA and how to avoid them
Applying for a UK ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is simple, but even small mistakes can lead to delays or rejections. Many travelers assume the process is foolproof, yet the most common errors are often small details that are easy to avoid with proper care.
Here’s what to watch out for.
Entering passport details incorrectly
Even a single typo in your passport number, name, or date of birth can cause your application to be rejected. The ETA is digitally linked to your passport, so every character must match exactly.
How to avoid it: Double-check your details against the machine-readable zone on your passport’s photo page. Enter information slowly and carefully.
Uploading low-quality photos
Blurry, cropped, or poorly lit photos of your passport or face are among the top reasons applications fail. If the details cannot be read clearly, the system cannot verify your identity.
How to avoid it: Take a sharp, well-lit photo of your passport’s full bio page. Use a recent, passport-style photo of yourself with a neutral background.
Using an invalid or expiring passport
Applying with an expired passport, or one that expires before your travel dates, makes your ETA invalid.
How to avoid it: Check that your passport will be valid for the full length of your stay. Ideally, it should be valid for at least six months beyond your trip.
Providing inconsistent information
Inconsistent details — such as giving different occupations or mismatched travel dates — can raise red flags during the review.
How to avoid it: Make sure all information is accurate and consistent across your application.
Entering the wrong email address
Since your ETA approval is sent by email, an incorrect email address means you may never receive your confirmation.
How to avoid it: Carefully check your email address before submitting the form. Use an inbox you can access easily during your travels.
Waiting until the last minute to apply
Although most ETAs are processed within 1–3 business days, unexpected delays are always possible. Applying too late can risk missing your trip.
How to avoid it: Apply at least a week before your travel date to ensure enough time for processing.
